HOW TO PLAY
CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL

SERVINGS PER GAME:
2 to 6 Players or Team Play Ages 10 and up

INGREDIENTS:
1 game board
1 Chicken Soup
200 cards (4 decks)
1 tsp. of humor
6 tokens
pinch of wisdom
1 pencil
dash of friendship
1 pad
a generous portion of love

Cradinal Game Instructions

PREPARATION:
No slicing, dicing, spicing, stirring, mixing or pre-heating necessary. Shuffle each of the 4 decks and place them on their corners of the board. Each player selects a color token and places it on the START COOKIN' COOKS‘ CHOICE space.

OBJECT:
Be the first player to collect 8 cards, 2 from each deck. And while you’re doing that enjoy the experience of sharing, friendship and laughter.

THE PLAY:
The hungriest player goes first. Play continues to the left.

TO START THE GAME:
The first player takes a card from any deck, rolls the die to pick a question, directive or task on the card, and tries to accomplish what the card asks. If the player is successful, he or she collects the card and moves ahead the number of spaces indicated on the card.

It’s three easy steps on each turn.
See the Condensed Soup Recipe below.

CONDENSED SOUP RECIPE:
Do this on every turn:

1. Pick a card.
2. Roll the die.
3. Do what the card says to collect a card and to move your token.

Here’s more about the three steps.
PICK A CARD: The space your token is on at the start of your turn determines which card deck you pick from. For example, if the Red player’s token is sitting on a KEY INGREDIENTS space, then a KEY INGREDIENTS card is selected.

Cooks’ Choice Space: This is a wild space. A player here can choose a card from any of the 4 decks.

Each of the 4 decks gives you a very different play experience. We'll talk about them later.

ROLL THE DIE: You can roll a picture of a spoon, bowl or pot of soup. See below:

COLLECTING A CARD & MOVING A TOKEN: If you do what the card asks, then you get to keep it. Move your token clockwise around the board the number of spaces that the card says. Your turn is over. If you don’t do what the card says, discard the card near its deck. Your token stays where it is and your turn is over.

ALL ABOUT THE CARDS: The 4 card decks are explained below. IMPORTANT: Only the player whose turn it is may collect a card and move!

KEY INGREDIENTS: These cards ask you to define yourself by identifying things that affect your daily life. You do this by listing your favorite things to eat, smell, read, watch etc. The fun is that everyone gets to participate. Here’s what to do when you draw a card:

1.Read aloud the listing that the die indicates. It may say list 1 or as many as 7 things

2. All players then secretly write down their lists on sheets from the pad.

3. Read your list aloud. Players compare their answers with yours. Count your total number of matches. If you have as many or more than the card asks, you win the card and move your token as directed. See below.

SPECIAL SEASONINGS: These cards use a multiple choice format and challenge you to guess how a particular player would respond to a special situation. Here’s what to do if you draw this card:

1. Identify the person you must match. The top of the card tells you who it is.

2. Read the situation aloud that the die indicates. You and the selected player secretly write down your a., b. or c. answer. Then check your answers. If it’s a match, keep the card and move your token ahead the number of spaces the card directs. See reverse side.

SECRET INGREDIENTS: These cards ask you to discover some information about another player – often it is something that is not well known. Here’s what to do when you draw a card:

1. Identify the player you must get the info from. The top of the card tells you who it is.

2. Read aloud the question the die indicates.

3. Ask the designated player up to 5 “yes” or “no” questions. You can guess anytime during the questioning.

If you’re successful in getting the answer, collect the card and move your token the number of spaces the card says. See below.

Who? The player two seats to your right.

*It’s Perri’s turn. She chooses Richard because he’s sitting two seats to her right. She has to discover what
his favorite Italian meal is. She asks, “Is it long and skinny?” He says “No.” She asks is it small and square?” He says “Yes.” She guesses ravioli which is correct.

1. Read the question aloud that the die indicates.
2. Then tell a story to the group that the question prompts. When finished, keep the card and move your token the number of spaces the card says.

LIVING YOUR DREAM

* It’s Justin’s turn and he tells the group that he would love to be on the front page of the newspaper for winning the Masters Tournament – he’s a golf nut and a decent player. Then he tells the group about his recent vacation to Augusta to see the match.

UH OH! SOUP’S NOT DONE. TRY AGAIN! When playing any of the above cards, if a player is not able to make the number of matches, the correct match, discover the secret or tell that particular story, that player does not collect a card and stays on the same space until his or her next turn to try again.

STIR IT UP! Occasionally, the die directs you to a task on a card that is different that any of the other challenges. Some are fun directives like doing exercises or telling a player you like him, etc. They’re sprinkled throughout all 4 card decks and are always marked “STIR IT UP!” Complete the task to collect the card and move your token.

Who? The player two seats to your left.

* It’s Perri’s turn. She stirs it up by shuffling the “Key Ingredients” card deck.

SOUP’S DONE!
The game is over when any player collects at least 2 cards from each of the 4 decks. The first player to do so, wins the game.

COOKING TIPS:

  • If for any reason, you cannot choose the player that a card indicates to either match or find out something about, just pick any player to answer.

  • Matches do not have to be exact in this game. For example, If someone says candy makes them smile and a player has listed        “chocolate,” we think that’s close enough for a match. There’s never one real winner in this game game. Everyone who plays wins. You’ll enjoy discovering things about each other and sharing life-affirming experiences.  Just as the Chicken Soup for the Soul books open the heart and rekindle the spirit, the game will do so, too.

TEAM PLAY:
Any number of people can play. Just split the group into teams. Everyone can play KEY INGREDIENTS together, but you may want to double the number to be matched for more of a challenge. In the case of the 3 other decks, each team chooses a player to compete one-on-one.
