Cradinal Game Instructions

PREPARATION:
First you must sort the cards by deck before beginning the game. Go through the cards, making one pile of "Family" cards, one pile of "Teenage" cards, one pile of "Kids" cards (these are the cards with colorful illustrations of two kids on the fronts), and a pile of "Adult" cards (these are the cards without the word teen-age or family and without figures on the front, these cards simply have the words Chicken Soup for the Soul and the card type "Special Seasonings," "Key Ingredients," etc. on the front). Once you have sorted them into four piles, thoroughly shuffle each deck. Then, place the four deck of cards on their appropriate places on the four corners of the game board.

Each player selects a game token and places it on the Start/Any space. The Start/Any space means players can choose a card from any of the decks other than the deck that is their own (example: An adult must pick a kid, teenage, or family card, a kid must pick a teen, adult or family card and a teen must pick an adult, kid or family card. Remember, the Family cards say Family on the front, the Teen cards say Teenage on the front, the Kid cards have two colorful illustrations of figures on the front and the Adult cards don’t have the word Teenage or Family or two pictures of kids on the front.

The game begins with the youngest player selecting a card and answering the appropriate question on that card with play continuing clockwise around the table.

OBJECT:
Be the first player to finish
"cooking your soup" by collecting any eight cards.

TO START THE GAME:
Start as above. Then players select their cards based on age. A teenager selects teen’s cards, an adult adult’s cards, a kid kid’s cards...etc. Once a player has selected a card, they roll the die. The die will land on a picture of a spoon, bowl or pot.

POT

These pictures correspond to the pictures next to the questions on the cards. The player performs the task, or answers the question, next to the corresponding picture. Remember, you must roll the die after picking any card to determine which question (or task) on the card you must answer (perform). Unless you are a "kid" (or you have picked a kid’s card after landing on an ANY space) the kid cards have only one question to answer, however "kids" (and players who have selected a "kid's" card) need to roll the die to determine how many spaces to move after they have answered their question. If they roll a spoon they move ahead one space, if they roll a bowl, they move two spaces or a pot three spaces.

THE PLAY:
The youngest player goes first with play continuing clockwise. The first player selects a card from one of the four decks based on the age of that player (as listed above). The cards ask players to tell stories, make lists and match answers. The spaces on the board also require players to do different things the spaces include:

PENCIL - If a player lands on this space, a player must draw a picture that reminds them of “family.” Once a player has successfully drawn a picture, they may select and keep any card, the player does not have to complete any task listed on the card he/she selects.

MUSICAL NOTE - Landing on this space means a player must sing a couple of lines from a song that reminds them of “family.” Once a player has successfully sung a song, they may select and keep any card, the player does not have to complete any task listed on the card he/she selects.

“HA, HA” - If a player lands on this space, they must tell a joke to the group. Once a player has successfully told a joke, they may select and keep any card, the player does not have to complete any task listed on the card he/she selects.

“BLAH, BLAH” - If a player lands on this space, they must say something nice about any other player or family member. Once a player has successfully said something nice about another player or family member, they may select and keep any card, the player does not have to complete any task listed on the card he/she selects.

TELEPHONE - If a player happens to land on this space, they must call a friend or family member on the phone and say “hi.” Once a player has successfully made the telephone call (or tried to call), they may select and keep any card, the player does not have to complete any task listed on the card. Note: Children, please check with your parents
and make sure it is okay before making any phone calls (local or long distance).

ANY - This space means that a player must choose a card from any deck other than the deck of their appropriate age. (example: An adult must pick a kid, teenage, or family card). After the game has started, the Start/Any space becomes just like all of the other Any spaces as players continue around the board.

SILHOUETTE OF A FAMILY - Landing on this space means a player must select a “Family” card and answer the question or perform the task on that card.

? - This space means that a player must select a card from their appropriate age range (a kid takes a kid card, a teen a teen card, and an adult an adult card). See specific cards below and on reverse side.

ALL ABOUT THE CARDS (IMPORTANT): Only the player whose turn it is may collect a card and move!

KEY INGREDIENTS: These cards ask you to define yourself by identifying things that affect your daily life. You do this by listing your favorite things to eat, smell, read, watch etc. The fun is that everyone gets to participate. Here’s what to do when you draw a card:

1. Read aloud the listing that the die indicates. It may say list 1 or as many as 7 things.

2. All players then secretly write down their lists on sheets from the pad.

3. Read your list aloud. Players compare their answers with yours. Count your total number of matches. If you have as many or more than the card asks, you win the card and move your token as directed. See below.

SPECIAL SEASONINGS: These cards use a multiple choice format and challenge you to guess how a particular player would respond to a special situation. Here’s what to do if you draw this card:

1. Identify the person you must match. The top of the card tells you who it is.

2. Read the situation aloud that the die indicates. You and the selected player secretly write down your a., b. or c. answer. Then check your answers. If it’s a match, keep the card and move your token ahead the number of spaces the card directs.

SECRET INGREDIENTS: These cards ask you to discover some information about another player – often it is something that is not well known. Here’s what to do when you draw a card:

1. Identify the player you must get the info from. The top of the card tells you who it is.

2. Read aloud the question the die indicates.

3. Ask the designated player up to 5 "yes" or "no" questions. You can guess anytime during the questioning. If you’re successful in getting the answer, collect the card and move your token the number of spaces the card says. See below.

FAVORITE RECIPES: These cards ask players to tell the group some kind of short, personal story. Here’s what to do when you draw this card:

1. Read the question aloud that the die indicates.

2. Then tell a story to the group that the question prompts. When finished, keep the card and move your token the number of spaces the card says.

It’s Justin’s turn and he tells the group that he would love to be on the front page of the news- paper for winning the Masters Tournament – he’s a golf nut and a decent player. Then he tells the group about his recent vacation to  Augusta to see the match.

UH OH! SOUP’S NOT DONE. TRY AGAIN!
When playing any of the above cards, if a player is not able to make the number of matches, the correct match, discover the secret or tell that particular story, that player does not collect a card and stays on the same space until his or her next turn to try again.

STIR IT UP! Occasionally, the die directs you to a task on a card that is different than any of the other challenges. Some are fun directives like doing exercises or telling a player you like him, etc. They’re sprinkled throughout all 4 decks and are always marked “STIR IT UP!” Complete the task to collect the card and move your token.

PLAYING WITH THE KIDS DECK:
NOODLE IT OUT cards - plays like KEY INGREDIENTS cards.

MENU MATCH- plays similar to SPECIAL SEASONINGS but in MENU MATCH the player who picked the card must match any one player in a two or three player game, and at least two players in a four to six player game.

WHAT’S COOKIN’ - play is the same as FAVORITE INGREDIENTS. Kids cards have only one question per card. Once a player has successfully completed the activity on the card they roll the die. Roll a spoon and move 1, a bowl move 2, a pot move 3.

SOUP’S DONE!
Game is over when a player collects any eight cards.

COOKING TIPS:

  • If for any reason, you cannot choose the player that a a card indicates to either match or find out something about, just pick any player to answer.

  • Matches do not have to be exact in this game. For example, If someone says candy makes them smile and a player has listed "chocolate," we think that’s close enough for a match.

  • There’s never one real winner in this game. Everyone who plays wins. You’ll enjoy discovering things about each other and sharing life-affirming experiences.

TEAM PLAY: Any number of people can play. Just split the group into teams. Everyone can play KEY INGREDIENTS together, but you may want to double the number to be matched for more of a challenge. In the case of the 3 other decks, each team chooses a player to compete one-on-one.
